Deadly shooting in Holland

HOLLAND — The Holland Department of Public Safety has confirmed the identity of the victim in a fatal shooting in Holland over the weekend. 

Capt. Robert Buursma confirmed to The Sentinel that the victim was Joseph Roberts, 36, of Holland. Roberts was shot multiple times at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Lincoln Avenue just after midnight Sunday morning, June 19. 

No announcement of an arrest has been made in the shooting as of 1 p.m. Tuesday. 

Roberts’ wife Bree Austin-Roberts was appointed to the Holland Public Schools board of education during a meeting Tuesday, June 14. During her interview, Austin-Roberts said she is a mother to three HPS students. 

Buursma stated that detectives have been “actively working the case” to locate potential witnesses or individuals who were present. He said there was a verbal altercation between the suspect and Roberts which led up to the shooting.

Authorities responded to the shooting at 12:13 a.m. Sunday and found a 36-year-old man, Roberts, with multiple gunshot wounds. Life-saving measures were attempted, but Roberts died at the scene.
